Foundation Certificate in Business Management

Introduction

The purpose of offering this programme is to provide students strong foundation in English and Business before embarking on higher learning programme course. This course is designed to offer critical fundamental knowledge in business studies and also aims to equip students with the right perspective into using English in business environment. Our key objective is to allow students to apply entry to various Universities around the world.

Course Objective

The Foundation Certificate in Business Management is designed to enable students to attain the basic thinking skills, creative ability, and technical knowledge in areas such as Business Research and Statistics, Economic Principles, Business Management, Ethics and Sustainability, Business Reports and also to develop students’ ability to understand and use the English language effectively. In addition, students will learn to be flexible and sensitive to the dynamic changes in business trends and also the needs of their industry.

ERCI runs its classes on a lecture-tutorial system. The average teacher-student ratio for lectures and tutorials are as follows:

  • Lectures – 150 Students to 1 Lecturer
  • Tutorials – 35 Students to 1 Tutor
Course Structure

Students undertaking the Foundation Certificate in Business Management programme will be expected to complete 7 modules of academic study. This programme is available on both full and part time basis, and will take 12 months and 18 months respectively to complete. Full-time students will attend classes 5 days a week on weekdays, while part-time students will attend classes 2 times a week on weekdays and/or on weekends.

Module Descriptions

Module 1: English Beginner Level
This module aims to equip students to an elementary level use of English in an academic environment. This course has been designed for those who have some basic knowledge of the English language. Participants are exposed to fundamental grammar structures, new vocabulary and conversational skills. Lectures and controlled practice exercises allow students to activate and solidify their understanding in a supported way.
 
Module 2: English Pre-Intermediate Level
This module aims to equip students to a pre-intermediate level use of English in an academic environment. This course has been designed for those who already have a solid foundation in the language and would like to further their studies. Participants are exposed to grammar structures, new vocabulary and conversational skills. Lectures and controlled practice exercises allow students to activate and solidify their understanding in a supported way.
 
Module 3: English Intermediate Level
This module aims to equip students to an intermediate level use of English in an academic or business environment. This course has been designed to provide students with the ability to communicate fluently and accurately in written and spoken English; and to understand written and spoken English, all appropriate to their respective level of study. It introduces business English vocabulary. Personalised practice exercises and real language work in real situations allow students to activate and solidify their understanding in a supported way.
 
Module 4: Business Research and Statistics
This module aims to provide students to understand the importance of research and statistics. In addition, the techniques of application and interpretation will be adequately covered.
 
Module 5: Economic Principles
This module aims to provide students a general knowledge of basic microeconomics principles and integrates with macroeconomic policies and relates this to major economic institutions that form the backbone of a country’s enterprise system. It also enables students to analyse and engage classroom learning on microeconomic and macroeconomic issues to their daily life. The objective of this module is to introduce students to the study of economics as a mean of analysing individuals and collective behaviour. Economics models and concepts such as opportunity cost and approaches such as marginal analysis will be widely applied and prove very useful in understanding various aspects of society and people’s lives.
 
Module 6: Business Management, Ethics and Sustainability
This module aims to guide students to explore the processes and functions of management. Students will be given the opportunity to explore traditional and modern management theory and the Planning, Organisation, Leadership and Control approach to management. To provide a holistic learning experience, this course will include elements of ethics and sustainability which are crucial in contemporary management practices and theories. It also provides students with an awareness of the ethical issues that exist in the increasingly complex business environment that graduates will be part of in the future.
 
Module 7: Business Reports
This module aims to provide students to apply report-writing principles to business scenario submissions. In addition, it allows students to learn the techniques of crafting a report with key points and supported by strong evidences.
Course Availability

Intakes for the Foundation Certificate in Business Management commences at an interval of every 2 – 3 months. All applications should be submitted to ERCI no later than 2 months before the commencement.

Assessment Framework

Courses are assessed by a combination of coursework, practical assignments and examinations. Unless otherwise stated, all modules within the Foundation Certificate in Business Management programme are assessed based on the 30% Competency-Based Assessment with the rest of the 70% based on individual assignments, class tests, quizzes and group assignments.

Entry Requirements

Local Singaporean/PR Student

  • Minimum C6 in English Language at GCE ‘O’ Level
  • 2 GCE ‘O’ Level Credits (Grade C6) or regional equivalent
  • Note: [the only language subject to be accepted is English]

International Student

  • Minimum of Year 10 Studies or equivalent
  • IELTS 4.5 or regional equivalent

Remarks

  • Applicants should be at least 15 years of age (based on birth year) at the time of registration

Graduation Requirements

Students must pass all prescribed modules in the Foundation Certificate in Business Management programme with a minimum grade of P (Pass).
